Today, November 25, 2024, we celebrate the eighth edition of Circular Mondaya day entirely dedicated to circular and responsible consumption. Born in Sweden in 2017 as a response to Black Friday, the movement has now reached global reach, involving over 1,300 companies, organizations and influencers from 40 countries. With a media campaign that has already reached 74 million people, Circular Monday confirms itself as a crucial event to promote a more sustainable future.
Why Circular Monday matters
As underlined by the co-founder of the movement, Alexandra Davidssona radical change is needed:
40 to 70% of global emissions arise from unsustainable production and consumption patterns. It’s time to abandon the hyper-consumption of Black Friday and move towards a circular economy
Circular Monday invites consumers to rethink their relationship with purchases, favoring practices such as reuse, recycling and responsible purchasing. This approach contrasts with the “buy-throw-away” idea promoted by Black Friday, proposing instead a consumption model oriented towards sustainability and waste reduction.
The circular economy: a necessity, not just a trend
The circular economy is rapidly gaining ground around the world. The global second-hand market, now valued beyond 128 billion euroscontinues to grow in double digits, with sectors such as second-hand luxury recording annual growth rates of 15.5%.
It’s incredible to see how the second-hand and vintage market is becoming an increasingly popular choice,” says Elin Bergman, COO of Cradlenet and spokesperson for #CircularMonday.
Even institutions like the European Investment Bank (EIB) are actively supporting this transition, increasing funding for projects related to waste reduction and resource reuse.
Italy and Circular Monday
In Italy, responsible consumption is already a growing reality. Second Simone GrassoItalian spokesperson of the movement,
