The images released on social media show a tourist picking up a large stone and throwing it towards Lani, a Hawaiian monk seal who was swimming near the shore. The animal manages to avoid the blow by retracting at the last moment, but the gesture provoked an immediate reaction from residents, authorities and users on social media. The episode occurred in the Front Street area, one of the symbolic places of Lahaina devastated by fires in recent years. A detail that made the anger of the local community even stronger, already deeply affected by the destruction of the territory.

Who is Lani, the seal that has become the symbol of West Maui
According to Maui Mayor Richard Bissen, the seal involved was Lani, a presence known on the coasts of West Maui for over twenty years. Not just any animal, therefore, but a familiar figure for residents and visitors of the island. Hawaiian monk seals are considered one of the most threatened marine species on the planet. Only about 350 remain on the main Hawaiian Islands, protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the federal Endangered Species Act. Disturbing, approaching or injuring them is a crime.
The federal investigation and the reaction of the authorities
After the video was released, agents from the Hawaii Department of Lands and Natural Resources began a federal investigation and identified a 37-year-old tourist from Seattle. The man was reportedly interrogated and then released after requesting legal assistance and refusing to make a statement. The case has been turned over to federal investigators from NOAA, who are evaluating possible violations of federal laws on the protection of marine wildlife. The penalties could be very heavy, with fines reaching up to $50,000 in some cases. Mayor Bissen publicly commented on the incident with very harsh words: this behavior, he explained, does not represent the type of tourism that Maui wants to welcome.
