Autostrade, tutor 3.0 installed: where they are, how they work, what changes and the fines provided

From 7 March 2025 the speed detection system Tutor has been updated and expanded with the installation of 26 new control routes along the Italian motorway network. This update is part of the strengthening of road safety under the Autostrade per l’Italia (Aspi) in collaboration with the State Police. With this implementation, the total number of sections monitored by the tutor has risen to 178, covering a total of about 1.800 kilometers.

What is the tutor

The tutor is a Advanced speed monitoring systemintroduced in 2005, which stands out from traditional speed cameras. While the latter record the instantaneous speed of a vehicle in a certain point, the tutor calculate the speed average between two portals installed along a stretch of highway. Thanks to this mechanism, a more constant and safe guide is promoted, avoiding sudden braking near the detection stations.

How the tutor works

But how does the tutor work? The sensor of the entrance portal detects the category of the vehicle (car, motorcycle, truck, bus, etc.) and activates the cameras that take photography, recording date and time of passage. The next portal sensor performs the same operations, photographing the vehicle again and recording date and time of passage. A central system makes the combinations between the data recorded by the cameras of the two portals, calculating the travel times of each vehicle.

If the travel times do not exceed those allowed, the data of the vehicles in question are immediately eliminated. If instead the limits are violated, the system automatically questions the motorization archives and the car rental archives to go up to the holder and the driver of the vehicle respectively. The violations are then ascertained by the traffic police and the system compilation and printing of the minutesby submitting the data for the notification procedure to the transgressor.

The news

The new version, called Tutor 3.0represents a significant evolution compared to the previous ones. In addition to an improvement in data transmission and processing, it offers a more detailed scan of vehicles imagesincreasing precision in the identification and management of infringements. Furthermore, this system is no longer limited only to speed control, but also monitors other dangerous behaviors, such as the irregular overcoming of heavy vehicles, improper use of lanes and even the identification of vehicles in the controunce.

The new sections

The new sections affected by the installation of tutor 3.0 include:

Fines

The sanctions for those who exceed speed limits vary according to the extent of the infringement. For an excess up to 10 km/hthe fines go from 42 to 170 euros; Between 10 and 40 km/h, from 173 to 694 euros with reduction of the driving license points; Between 40 and 60 km/h, from 543 to 2,170 euros with suspension of the license up to three months; Over 60 km/h, from 847 to 3,389 euros with suspension of the license up to one year.
