More than 130 organizations have signed a letter to request the adoption of an EU action plan to promote the use of vegetable foods, with the aim of radically changed the European food system
Over 130 organizations (including the Italian Veganok, Univegan and Assovegan) have signed a letter asking for the adoption of a EU action plan for plant foods. The goal is to make vegetable foods a privileged choice in the plate of Europeans, which would have a positive impact on health, the environment and the economy.
The EU action plan for plant foods is not only a declaration of intent, but an ambitious program to transform the entire European food system.
The main objectives of the plan include:
The action plan does not only concern the environment and health, but also social equity. Renata Balducci, president of Assovegan, underlines how this initiative is not only an environmental strategy, but also a step towards a wider food justice:
The choice to encourage the production and consumption of plant food is not only an environmental question, but an act of justice for animals and society.
From an economic point of view, the plan promises to make the entire food system more efficient. Today, the agri -food sector costs about 3 trillions of euros per year in environmental and health expenses. If the consumption of vegetable foods increased, these costs could be reduced by 43%, with a total saving of about 1.3 trillions of euros.
And not only would a healthier food system be favored, but new growth opportunities for businesses and farmers would also be created.
