If you are an administrator of some WhatsApp group – and in case you don’t know – starting from Saturday the AI will be available on WhatsApp and will have access to all chats. Therefore, all group administrators should enable the “Enhanced Privacy” option. Otherwise, the AI will be able to open group messages, view phone numbers and even access personal data on the phone, including private chats.
Here’s how to avoid it:
1. Open the group chat.
2. Tap the chat name at the top.
3. Scroll down and enable the “Enhanced chat privacy” option.
I invite you to do this as soon as possible (and share this information with the other groups you are part of); this operation can only be performed by administrators.
The function indicated by the message really exists. The danger described around, however, is not. Meta AI does not get automatic access to WhatsApp groups from a certain Saturday, it cannot freely open users’ private conversations and activating Advanced Privacy is not the switch that prevents artificial intelligence from rummaging through your phone.
The official WhatsApp documentation itself makes this clear: personal messages with friends and family remain protected by end-to-end encryption and Meta AI can read what is deliberately shared with the assistant. A conversation with the AI must be initiated by the user or a participant in the group.
“Enhanced Privacy” really exists, and that’s probably why the hoax works
The cleverest detail of the chain is the button. There Enhanced chat privacy it’s a real feature, introduced by WhatsApp in April 2025 to add a layer of protection to the most sensitive conversations.

When Meta AI can read what we write on WhatsApp
Here the distinction becomes important. WhatsApp does indeed host AI-powered features, and when we choose to use them, some content can be sent to the AI.
For normal interactions with Meta AI, WhatsApp specifies that Meta can receive prompts and messages that the user decides to share with the assistant. In groups, for example, messages explicitly addressed to Meta AI can become part of the interaction. Other messages in your personal conversation continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption.
That’s a pretty substantial difference from “the AI will have access to all chats.” To use the assistant you need to perform an action: open a conversation with Meta AI, mention it where applicable or voluntarily share content. In 2026, WhatsApp is also expanding its AI functions with tools that make the matter a little more complex, and this is where it pays to be precise.
One of them is Side Chatwhich allows you to privately ask Meta AI for help starting from the context of an individual or group conversation. In this case the assistant actually uses chat messages to understand what you are talking about. However, WhatsApp claims that the system uses the technology Private Processing: Meta and WhatsApp cannot access messages used as context and the AI side conversation remains visible only to the user who opened it. This feature is also optional and its availability still varies between countries and devices.
The same principle is used for other AI functions, such as private summaries of unread messages: they are optional and WhatsApp indicates Advanced Privacy as a tool to prevent a particular conversation from being used for these functions.
No AI thus gains access to the entire phone
The part of the chain that Meta AI could access “personal data on your phone, including private chats” further raises the alarm without providing any mechanism that makes this possible.
The permissions granted to an application on your phone and the ability to use an AI feature within a chat are different things. From the official WhatsApp documentation simply because the Advanced Privacy of a group has not been activated.

You can activate Advanced Privacy if you want to limit exports, downloads and use of messages in AI functions. You don’t need to do this to prevent Meta AI from secretly reading all your conversations.
And above all there is no need to forward the message to other groups “as soon as possible”. That, curiously, remains one of the few functions of the chain that continues to work very well.
